Advanced Medical Support Assistant

This position is associated with the Group Practice Management Service at the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center and provides services to Veterans via the Saranac Lake Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). The Advanced Medical Support Assistant provides a wide variety of administrative tasks associated with maintaining and supporting the work performed within the Primary Care and other Specialty Care sections. Advanced Medical Support Assistants (MSA) are responsible for providing assistance to Veterans, creating a smooth process for the management of his/her outpatient appointments as well as support work in connection with the care and treatment given to the Veterans by performing a variety of support duties that facilitate the work of an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (e.g. PACT), ensuring that the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic, and make any necessary adjustments, working in collaboration with the appropriate clinic, developing and maintaining effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies. The incumbent will work with the supervisor in setting priorities and deadlines, providing input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures. The incumbent will support clinic operations including patient reception, scheduling and utilizing advanced clinic access principles to ensure responsiveness to Veterans questions and concerns and reducing the overall cost of care by controlling the use of resources and ensuring that referrals are made promptly and timely to improve clinic access. The work requires a high degree of judgment in responding to both employee and patient concerns and providing solutions to process problems as they affect day-to-day operations. The incumbent must be able to independently manage position responsibilities with little supervision as well as set priorities and deadlines adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs. a. Citizenship . Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.) b. Experience and Education (1) Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; -or- (2) Education. One year above high school; -or- (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. c. Certification. None required. Grade Requirements:
(a) Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Qualifying experience includes experiences gained in working in an administrative health care setting, to include, but may not be limited to:
scheduling, canceling, rescheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non- emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.). (b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
- Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. - Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels. - Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care. - Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment. - Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process. - Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder and repeated bending. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
